October 26th will mark TWO years since we launched Oregon Music News.
Whew.
To celebrate, we’re throwing a party at the Secret Society Ballroom on Wednesday, October 26th. Doors open at 7pm, music starts at 7:30pm, and it’s free. We’ll have a big tasty birthday cake provided by Beaverton Bakery, there’ll be a raffle with cool prizes, and you’ll get to meet all of us (if you want).
Playing for us this year are: A hot Funk Band, an electronic/singer/songwriter/ambient/etc. wizard, and a group of as-yet-unnamed indie rockers. Here’s the lineup:

Caranto and Embick at the Blue Monk
The Renato Caranto Project: A great Funk band–here’s what we wrote about them back in May. Among other things, we said, “As good a Jazz player as he is, Caranto is heart-thumpingly stirring when he plays Soul, Blues and R&B.
“Also in the Renato Caranto Project: Ramsey Embick on keys (including clavinet, or whatever makes the clavinet sounds these days), Tony (also known as Anthony Carr) who studied with famed Portland composer Bryan Johanson, and classical guitar masters Christopher Parkening and Michael Lorimer. Jake Kott plays bass, Ed Pierce is on drums and although he is a well-respected and very versatile drummer, his Funk beats in this band are intense and compare to the best in town, even though he is under the radar in that regard.
“They play it fat and they do not hold anything back. Caranto squawks, he wails, he does everything you would ever want from a Funk sax player. The depth of his Soul playing is obviously bred from a fundamental love of what he’s playing. There’s no other place it could come from.”
Auditory Sculpture (Keith Schreiner) and friends Stephanie Schneiderman, Orianna Herrman and Derek Sims: Keith Schreiner is one of our busiest composers and performers. If you aren’t aware of that, it’s ok with him. Much of the time he doesn’t even use his name, preferring Auditory Sculpture instead. Here’s where you know him from. He was part of Dahlia, the much-loved electronica band that used to pack Ohm every single Tuesday night for years.
He was the force behind Stephanie Schneiderman’s new sound and her breakthrough album Dangerous Fruit, as well as performing and touring with her. He has remixed Storm Large. Was one-half of Suckapunch. Led a huge band, which used to play at the Tiger Bar. Is the guiding light for Oracle, writing their tunes and performing with them. He has played for years, on and off, as a solo at East. He made Jazztronica a breakthrough Jazz/Electronica fusion album with trumpeter Derek Sims.
There’s more, but Schreiner makes his bread and butter writing music for film, commercials and similar lucrative projects. He has worked for Fila, Autodesk, EA Hockey, Safeway and many others.
There will be solo performances by Keith and he will be joined on stage by his colleagues for surprise collaborations.
Here’s a video interview about what he’s up to:
Stay tuned for an upcoming announcement of the headlining indie rock act.
