Country music icon Glen Campbell was the man of the hour during last night’s 54th annual Grammy awards show as he was awarded this year’s Lifetime Achievement award.
The legendary singer was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s last year and is currently on his “Goodbye Tour.” After becoming periodically disoriented during shows, he and his family “didn’t want people to get the wrong impression” that he was drunk or on drugs and realized it was time to announce his diagnosis. The tour goes through June.
A five-time Grammy winner himself, Campbell took the stage last night for a riveting performance of his biggest hit, “Rhinestone Cowboy,” a number one hit song in 1975. Contemporary artist Blake Shelton and 2012 ‘Best New Artist’ nominees The Band Perry took the stage with him and three of his children, who performed, as usual, right alongside him in his own band.

Very sad to see him go. The performance at the Grammys was great, given his illness which is clear to see. Probably the biggest compliment he ever had was when Alan Touissant said that he never really knew how ro perform Southern Nights, which Alan wrote, until Campbell showed him how. Really would have been fitfing cof Alan to have been there last night.
Grr…stupid autocorrect. Still getting used to new phone.
Your music and you, have always quietly been a part of my life. I have never seen you play in concert and will not say farewell as you you will always have a place in my mind and affections. Best wishes to you and your family Mr. Campbell and thank you for all the special moments and memories.
God has shared Glen with us and gifted him with his amazing talent. From “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour” through the 54th Grammy’s, he was a class act during his career. He also had weaknesses like every other man and had to go through the desert to climb back to the mountian. Through his perseverance and spirituality, he is once again the musician/singer we know.
I hope the powers that be help slow Glen’s disease progression, through medicine, spirituality and the love of his family and fans.
“Gentle on My Mind” I’ve liked is since first hearing it, at about the age of four.
