Monica Nelson: Coffeeshop Conversations #48 - A Punk Rock state of mind

By TOM D'ANTONI //

A hurricane on two feet, from her days with The Obituaries to New York and back.

We are at World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan for another OMN Coffeeshop Conversation, constantly raining edition.

This time we’ve got singer Monica Nelson here. She was in the historic 80’s punk band The Obituaries here in Portland. She left Portland destroyed and in ruins and moved to New York where she lived for twenty years. She returned a few years ago and now leads Monica Nelson and the Highgates.

I’m pretty sure we’re going to find out what she means by a “Punk Rock frame of mind.”

Next time we’ll talk to bassist Glen Moore of the band Oregon who has a new duo album with fellow bassist David Friesen.

But now let’s meet the one and only Monica Nelson.

The next "Heavy Gone Acoustic" show is Wednesday, November 25, a free show at the White Eagle with " Lesli Sanders (as seen in episode 15 of "Freaks & Geeks" [https://youtu.be/sTn7ngFSdGM] as well as lead vocals and bass in Prophets Of Addiction, formerly of Pretty Boy Floyd, City Girls' Boys, Queeny Blast Pop, Talks Cheap, plus touring bassist of Marky Ramone (Ramones) & Phil Lewis (LA GUNS). AND! Mane of the Cur makes their debut acoustic appearance," says Ms. Nelson.
