Others have written about classical or rock elements in this album. I listened for it. Isn’t there. Country, yes. They do a stutteringly outside version of the Louvin Brothers’ (of all people) The Christian Life. They never joke around with it, they just play it the way they hear it. The Louvins might come after them with a shotgun, but it’s actually lovingly respectful…if you have the ear for it.

But no, this is a jazz album. As much as the marketers don’t want to say it, it is. Good for it.

As a matter of fact, there are long free sections, particularly Lundbom’s guitar solos which range far and wide but generally come back to a rhythmic resolution

Listen to: Truncheon:

Guitarist/composer Jon Lundbom leads with Jon Irabagon on alto sax, Bryan Murray on tenor, Moppa Elliott on bass and Danny Fischer on drums.

This is a fine album which should have to rely on apologies from people trying to grasp at a wider audience. Lundblom doesn’t pander to any thing or any body. These musicians stand on their own.

Their full expression and collaboration is what’s here. Full expression and great ability…what else do you need?

The only tag needed is great improvised music. That’s what jazz is.
