Kentucky’s WYMT-TV is reporting that:
Legendary Folk Singer Jean Ritchie is in a New York hospital after suffering a major stroke earlier this month. Ritchie is a Perry County native and has been called the mother of folk and a national treasure.
She recently turned 87 years old.
Long-time friend Mike Mullins with the Hindman Settlement School says Ritchie had a stroke on December 4th and possibly another one after that.
She’s been unable to talk but can respond to commands.
The family says she may be moved to a nursing home once she’s stable enough to leave the hospital.
At the same time a Lexington, KY news site is reporting that her songs and letters will be preserved by the Library of Congress.
