Rappers Josh Martinez and Sleep have been entertaining audiences with hilarious, upbeat hip hop as the Chicharones since their first collaborative album in 2003.
Together they are known for absurdly fun shows that have included full-on Mario Bros. costumes, live magic (both Sleep and Chicharones’ DJ Z-One are magicians), and dance routines.
This past week they released a song and video for Willamette Week/Local Cut’s annual holiday compilation Another Gray Christmas. “Straight Outta Noggin” is a take on the NWA classic “Straight Outta Compton” and they do a superb job. Sleep takes on the role of Ice Cube while Josh does Eazy-E, matching rhyme styles, phrases and specific words from the original song, all with a nod to the yuletide beverage.
DJ Z-One clued me in on the video and the process of making it. In only one day, Sleep and Josh wrote and recorded vocals, Zebulon Dak of Momentum Studios mixed it down, and Z-One scratched in samples. A day later they shot the entire video, and by the next morning it was edited down. Not bad for a weekend’s work.
The result is immediately funny to anyone who loves the original song. Once you start hearing the lyrics you only laugh harder: “How you gonna drink this down without rum? / What is eggnog? / By definition it’s elf cum.”
