Soul’d Out Festival 2012: Bettye LaVette closes the festival with beauty, pain, energy, artistry

Our National Editor, Art Levine, wrote this for us a while back. When considering what we should do about Bettye LaVette’s appearance at the Aladdin Theater on Thursday, April 26, as part of the Soul’d Out Music Festival 2012, the choice was easy. Here is Art’s story.

“Go-go is D.C.’s very own unique contribution to the world of pop music, and Chuck Brown was regarded as Go-go’s creator and, arguably, its most legendary artist,” D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said in a statement.


Soul bassist Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn, dead at 70

He was in Japan for a series of concerts, and had played two shows on Saturday night. His friend and fellow musician Steve Cropper, who was on the same tour, said Dunn had died in his sleep.
